Episode 42 - “In Defense of Billie Eilish” with guest Ione Walton
Saturday Mar 21, 2020
Saturday Mar 21, 2020
COVID-19 has swept the earth, and a large portion of the world is in isolation. I didn't have an episode ready to go, so I pulled this one out of the archives. This was recorded months ago with my daughter Ione, but I felt it wasn't strong enough to release at the time. But these are strange times afoot, so here you are, I figure even the slightest amusement is welcome in isolation.
In this episode Ione and I defend pop sensation Billie Eilish, as well as share music, get bored and get bullied.

I was not going to miss a Mr. Bungle reunion, and neither was my old friend Nick. Nick Loiacano and I became friends over 20 years ago in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and have collaborated on a number of musical endeavors. He was my partner in crime on Nothing's "The Grey Subaudible" album, he's the main writer in Climb to Zalem and has been involved in a number of bands including Killer Whale, Self Spiller and Snares of Sixes. Nick and I often bonded over Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, so it only made sense for me to fly down to Los Angeles to join Nick for the show.
The morning after the amazing Mr. Bungle concert, we invaded a small studio in Los Angeles, and took it to the next level by recording on location, and with a producer. In this episode we do a deep dive on the history and musicality of The Meat Shits including some A Capella Meat Shits covers, we talk at length about Nick's now defunct podcast The Bionic Broadcast, and we play each other music from Japan, England, Texas and from all over the god-damned globe.
Join us for some tunes, a few laughs, and a very unique episode of I Hate Music.

Episode 40 - with guest Scot Jenerik (AUME, F-Space)
Tuesday Feb 11, 2020
Tuesday Feb 11, 2020
Upon arriving at my studio, I told Scot we would record for two hours at the most. We recorded for six. This is the first installment of our long form meeting.
Scot and I have known each other for a relatively short period of time, but we became fast friends, and even though we come from two different musical worlds, those two worlds share a lot of commonalities. Scot is a composer and conceptual artist operating out of Portland after being in the San Francisco Bay area for many years. Scot has been a radio show host, a lecturer, a performer, a label owner, a sound artist and an all around fascinating person and artist for over 30 years.
Join us while we discuss Rush, Mr. Bungle, Scot's penchant for playing with fire, performance and the ever popular "creative process!"

Mirai Kawashima and Sigh have been pushing, dare I say, smashing the paradigms within metal for decades. From their early days on Euronymous' Deathlike Silence Productions to their most recent album "Heir to Despair," Sigh has found comfort in the dark seeping underbelly of music.
I asked Mirai to provide some music to share with my cohort Don Anderson. Music that has intrigued him, confused him, provoked him or perhaps inspired him over the years. He gave me a bounty of music from Jazz, to Metal, to Traditional Asian and beyond.
Join Don and I as we digest this heaping plate of broken guitar chords and squealing horns. Along with Mirai's song choices we discuss Portland record shopping, Primus, improvisation and poor performances.

For this episode I was joined by my good friends Joy Von Spain and Masaaki Masao. They are the duo that comprises the death industrial project To End It All, and as if that didn't keep them busy enough, they are in Eye of Nix as well. These two are two of my favorite performers and I have been blessed to see them, and share the stage with them many times.
I was able to catch up with them when they came down from Seattle to play a special invite only show at Azoth here in Portland. Listen in as we discuss hip hop, drum n bass, Weird Al and take a couple listener suggestions.

Episode 37 - with guest Casey C-P — King Gizzard “Infest the Rats' Nest” Special
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
Once again, back is the incredible, the rhyme animal, the uncannable CC-P. He brought with him the latest King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard album, "Infest the Rats' Nest." As always, when the Gizz releases a new record, we are here with bated breath, ready to digest and dissect, to criticize and celebrate.
On this album King Gizzard decide to tread through waters that are dear to me heart, they decide to dip their quill into the genre of metal. I think it is fair to say that both CC-P and JWW were fairly skeptical of this move but decided to listen to the record together for the first time and see how it plays out.
Join us as we bravely follow King Gizzard down deep and dark hallways into H-E-Double Hell Sticks. Recoil as the internet tells us again that we do not know what we are talking about. Feign fascination as we discuss jaw harps, Metallica, Eco-disaster, and The Denver Broncos.

In the first of what I hope is a series of many, I welcome a guest curator for this episode. This time, I asked legendary producer/engineer/musician Dan Swano to pick six songs from his career to share with us. You may know him from his work with Edge of Sanity, Pan Thy Monium, or Bloodbath, or perhaps even his production or engineering work with bands such as Marduk or Opeth, but get ready to dig into some deep cuts from Dan Swano's career, handpicked by the man himself for you to hear, and for Ramin and I to discuss.
Join return guest Ramin Hosseinabad and I as we crack a beer or two, share a laugh, and stumble over our words trying to express our admiration for Mr. Swano.

Episode 35 - with guest Jori Apedaile (Eneferens, Hyalithe)
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Jori has been a guest before. Last summer when Eneferens came through Portland on tour, he stopped by to share some music. This summer bore witness to another Eneferens tour, so we decided to do it again.
At the time of this recording, Jori was in the process of moving back to Bozeman, Montana after living for a couple of years in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He joined me towards the end of his tour that stretched all across The United States. Join us as we talk about metal from around the world, take a listener request, discuss the scene in Minneapolis and how its changed over the years, and the wonders of the Hyalite Canyon.

I Hate Music Podcast
Music-centered discussions, often with musicians and music lovers from all over the world. We touch on topics such as the music industry, composition, touring, recording, as well as the ups and downs of being a music devotee and obsessive. We also have deep-dives into records and songs with the artist, to see how particular pieces are made, and the thought processes behind them.
Hosts: Jason Walton and Nick Wusz.
