Episode 50 - “Override of the Overlooked” with guests Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn
Wednesday Nov 11, 2020
Wednesday Nov 11, 2020
This is like one of those cheesy '80s sitcom crossovers, but better... much better. Jeff and Hunter, the two maniacs behind the insanely awesome and inspiring podcast, Radical Research, join me to celebrate I Hate Music's 50th episode! I asked each of them to bring to the table a band or album that they love, but is largely ignored or derided, and I chose one as well. We then shared these selections and discussed them.
Jeff Wagner and I go way back. We had a 'zine together in the '90s and have worked and interacted with each other in various capacities since. Jeff has worked for a number of record labels, was the editor of Metal Maniacs, and is the author of "Soul On Fire - The Life And Music Of Peter Steele" as well as "Mean Deviation: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal."
Hunter is a rather new friend, but his wonderous drumming and intimidating vocabulary keeps me engaged almost daily. He is the drummer for the fantastic band Canvas Solaris, and his boyish charm and southern drawl is a welcome addition to my life.
So please pass your aux to Jeff and Hunter, and join us as we celebrate I Hate Music's 50th episode by sharing overlooked gems, discussing Impaled Nazarene's treatment of goats, and playing Metal Mad Libs.

Episode 49 - “Listener Requests Part II” with guest Ione Walton
Wednesday Oct 21, 2020
Wednesday Oct 21, 2020
I really enjoy getting listener suggestions. I typically get them via Email, but this morning Ione and I decided to get on FaceBook and Instagram and ask listeners to send in their recommendations as we record. We received roughly 50 requests from all over the world, and I can say without hyperbole that this group of songs are by far the worst, most annoying, and painfully ignorant bunch of songs ever assembled.
However, we love you for trying, and encourage you to keep trying to impress and amaze us. But for now, please allow Ione and I to pass the aux to you, as we dissect and judge your taste in music.

Episode 48 - “A Brief History of the Israeli Metal Scene” with guest Tal Fried
Wednesday Oct 07, 2020
Wednesday Oct 07, 2020
Tal Fried is an Israeli native living in Tel Aviv. Israel has a long and vibrant history of fascinating metal bands, rich with the culture of their homeland but also with an ear turned towards the metal community worldwide. Unfortunately, a large number of these bands have remained unknown to metal fans outside of Israel, so I asked Tal to show me the hidden gems that lay next to The Mediterranean sea.
Many metal fans are familiar with Salem or Orphaned Land, but in this episode Tal takes us on a quick, but in depth, trip into the world of Israeli metal. We discuss the importance of Israeli promoter Yishai Sweartz and the Agalloch performance in Tel Aviv almost a decade ago. Tal plays death, black and doom metal bands from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and shares personal stories of his interactions with them as well as accounts of their live performances.
In no way is this meant to be an exhaustive history of metal in Israel. This is simply the tip of the iceberg in a deeply rooted and passionate scene. So pass the aux to Tal and listen as we share stories, fight xenophobia, and delve into the metal community in one of my favorite places in the world; Israel.

Episode 47 - "Listener Requests" with guest Ione Walton
Monday Sep 07, 2020
Monday Sep 07, 2020
I stumbled across this lost recording the other day. Ione and I recorded this right before the pandemic hit. We were taking listener requests that had been Emailed in, but the pandemic and subsequent quarantine had distracted me, and the episode had become buried by time and dust, and forgotten... until now.
Ione plays some music she likes, I play a little that I like, and we both critique and comment on the listener suggestions. Unfortunately, since this episode was lost for so long, the information is quite out of date, but music is timeless, right?
Come pass the aux with Ione and I as we cheer and jeer your awful selections, and make some poor selections ourselves. Keep those suggestions and requests coming as we love your input, even when your taste is bad.

Episode 46 - with guest Dylan Neal (Thief, Botanist)
Monday Aug 24, 2020
Monday Aug 24, 2020
When I first heard about Thief, I was skeptical. I was about to embark on a short tour with one of Toby Driver's various projects, (Piggy Black Cross), and Toby told me Thief from Los Angeles would be joining. That first night of tour Dylan and Thief stunned me with the craft of their songs, the passion in their performance, and I was instantly impressed with their unique and dynamic shows each night.
Now, a few moons later, we have shared the stage a handful of times and Thief has cemented itself as one of my absolute favorite bands. In 2019 Thief released "Map of Lost Keys" on Prophecy Productions. The album is a rich and emotional dive into the musical mind of Dylan Neal, who writes and records all the music himself, but is joined by two others for live performances.
Come listen to us get unhinged while we discuss production techniques, obscure bands from the Czech Republic, racism in art, and of course, share music... and don't forget to pass the aux!

Episode 45 - “Quarantine Songs” Part II: The Reckoning
Tuesday Jun 09, 2020
Tuesday Jun 09, 2020
Life in quarantine rolls on, and so does the music. Our first "Quarantine Songs" episode received a warm welcome, so we decided to follow it up, with the same basic format, but some slight changes. Most notably, there are no listener submissions on this episode. This episode is comprised of a handful of notable musicians, and people in the music industry sharing their quarantine picks with us. I am tempted to tell you who will be bending your ears with tunes and talk, but I think its best to let the element of surprise have the upper hand here.
I will say, this is a very diverse, eclectic and provocative mix of music, once again proving that the metal community at large, listens to a wide array of genres and styles. So, grab your mask, some hand sanitizer, and fight the quarantine blues with the power of music!

Episode 44 - with guest Casey C-P — King Gizzard “Chunky Shrapnel Film” Special
Wednesday Apr 29, 2020
Wednesday Apr 29, 2020
We won't let this die, and neither will King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Casey C-P and I made a pact, a blood oath, that each time this band of scruffy Aussies makes a new album we will be there, just like the Jackson 5, to dissect, critique and perform a deep dive to the depths of degradation. Nothing will keep us from recording a podcast each time King Gizzard completes a project. Not snow, not rain, not COVID-19, so here we are, ready to inject our veins and flush our lungs with the disinfecting power of Australian music.
This time, its not a proper album, but its a feature film that was set for a theatrical release before the world was consumed by isolation and social distancing requiring everyone to stand one Joey Ramone away from each other. Now, offered up twice via Vimeo, for 24 hours only, the King Gizzard movie, "Chunky Shrapnel." CC-P and I huddled up and through the magic of a conference bridge, joined forces once more to ask the prevailing question "What's with that awful band name?"

Life is weird right now. The world is isolated, locked away behind closed doors and many of us turn to art to soothe us when the world has become more dangerous and terrifying than it usually is. With this in mind, I asked listeners to send me their "Quarantine Songs." Songs that they find themselves turning to while stuck at home. Some people recorded a brief introduction to the song, while others Merle and I had a robot help us with the introductions. Along with the listeners, some musicians and artists gave me their picks as well, and in fact the response was so great, I am currently assembling a follow up to this episode of more Quarantine songs.
My goal with this podcast was never to be like a radio show, but strange times call for evolution and revolution, so these songs will be played uninterrupted by our yammering. And I would be remiss if I did not thank the legendary punk rock icon Merle Allin of The Murder Junkies for his contribution to this episode. Merle, brother of the infamous GG Allin, has been performing with and without his brother for decades and shows no signs of stopping.
So, join us for an eclectic mix of songs and moods to keep you company during these quarantine times.
